iPad’s multitasking: How to Split Screen, Slide Over, and Picture in Picture

Multitasking is one of the important features that work best with a larger screen. Multitasking feature was introduced to the iPad with the release of iOS 9 and Apple made it even more advanced with the release of iOS 11. With iPad OS 13, the feature is greatly developed with new options and gestures which makes the iPad more useful and productive. Here, you will come to know how to use multitasking functions such as Slide Over, Split Screen, and pictures-in-picture.  

How to enable these features?

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap Multitasking & Dock
  3. Here you will find four options. I suggest you enable all the four.

Split Screen

Split Screen allows you to work on two apps simultaneously side by side. It’s also possible to work on the same app with two screens such as the notes app opened with two notes.

How to use Split Screen on the iPad? 

  1. Open an app 
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring the dock 
  3. Touch, hold and drag the second app you want to open to the left or right of the screen. Tip: If you don’t find the app, open and close it again. This will make the app to appear in the recently used app on the dock
  4. While in the Split view, you can resize the app by dragging the slider in the middle to the right or left.  

To close the app, just drag the slider to the edge of the screen. 

If the app opened in Slide Over instead of Split Screen, you can adjust the app by dragging it to the corners to switch it Split Screen. If this doesn’t work, start over.

Slide Over

Split Screen allows the apps to float independently on the screen. The app can be placed anywhere on the screen instead of a fixed position.

How to use Slide Over on the iPad? 

  1. Open an app 
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring the dock 
  3. Touch, hold and drag the second app to the center of the screen and release the fingers. This will open the in slide over mode.
  4. You can move the app by dragging it from the top small grey bar to anywhere on the screen.  

To close the Slide Over, let us assume that the app in on the left side. Now drag the app to the left to close the Slide Over. The same goes for the app if it is on the right side. 

Slide Over in Split View

Slide Over in Split View lets you use three apps at the same time. Two apps can be opened by the Split view and the third app can be opened by Slide Over.

How to use Slide Over in Split View? 

  1. Open an app using Split View 
  2. Now that you have two apps opened. Touch, hold and drag the third app to the center of the screen from the dock. Make sure to drag the app to the center of the screen, otherwise you will end up replacing any one of the apps in the slip view. 

Tip: You can swipe right to dismiss the app and swipe left to bring it back.

Picture in Picture: 

Picture in Picture lets you use other apps while watching a video or using facetime 

How to use Picture-In-Picture on the iPad? 

  1. Open the video or facetime 
  2. If the player is supported, the picture in picture icon   will appear. If you’re using any browser, open the video in a full screen. 
  3. Tap the icon to scale down the video to the corner of the screen. 

Controls for Picture in Picture 

You can,  

Resize the window: To make the window larger, pinch it. To make the window smaller, to the opposite 

Hide the window: Drag it to the right or left of the screen 

Unhide the window: Tap the arrow  

Move the window: Drag it 

Return to the original video screen: Tap the picture in picture  icon
